Our forty-day Lenten journey began with the reception of ashes as we were marked as God's own people. On Palm Sunday, we received palms to remind us of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. And as Lent came to a close, the Easter Triduum began with a three-day celebration of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. Now we move through the fifty-days of Easter towards Ascension Sunday and Pentecost, when Christ's Easter promise of the Holy Spirit is fulfilled.
Easter is filled with moments of great gladness and celebration as we remember Christ's victory over death. It is a time when we cry out with "alleluias" to praise the Lord. We are reminded of our baptism through the rite of sprinkling during Mass, and we are brought together with those who have been baptized at Easter.
Through Jesus' resurrection, we are given the strength to answer God's call. He heals those who are suffering and leads those who are lost. By his saving grace, he offers us his unfailing love and forgiveness as he walks with us to carry the crosses we bear in life just as Simon from Cyrene carried the cross for Jesus.
Dying he destroyed our death and rising he restored our life. May the joys of Easter be with each of you through this and all seasons!
