An altar server assists the presider at Mass, most importantly with the opening and closing prayers, the preparation of the altar, the lavabo (washing of hands), lighting and carrying candles, and stewardship of the wine and water at Mass.
In the ninth century, young boys were given some of the duties of acolytes, one of the minor ministries (perhaps explaining the confusion in terms), and these responsibilities were extended to girls in 1983. This ministry for youth is open to those who have reached their tenth birthday or are older; there is no upper age limit. Training occurs quarterly, so please contact Kathy Skinner if you or your child is interested.
