I find those three words guide me in thinking about the Trinity - the wow-ness of the Father, the helpfulness of the Son and gratitude for the Holy Spirit.
Many mornings, I stare in wonder at photos from the Hubble telescope. The beauty and weirdness of these images engenders a feeling that that Bible labels as “fear of the Lord” in me. A more modern way of naming that feeling might be awe. Creation is quite frankly unbelievable. I associate this wow feeling with God the Father. Yet finding my way in this awesome cosmos is daunting, frightening at times - I need help. That is where God the Son comes into play. Committed to following the way of Christ, I look to Jesus of Nazareth for clues as to how to live a fully human life. His teachings and way of life and death offer me guidance and grace as I make my way through life. Finally, this experience of living in an amazing cosmos and being offered guidance in the way to live within it brings forth a desire to give thanks. Gratitude for the connection to God the Father and God the Son through the gift of their Holy Spirit completes the circuit of Trinitarian love within me.
If all that verbiage seems a bit farfetched, let me put it this way. When my son was born, a prayer of Wow escaped my lips unbidden. I have found Help in many forms as he has tried to teach me how to be a good mother. I would like to say Thanks to him, to all of you, to God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit for the gift of his life, our lives, all life.
Side-note - Liturgically speaking, my son was baptized 42 years ago today. I say a prayer of thanksgiving for him every Trinity Sunday, well actually, every day of my life.
