Currently Anne with an E, a remake of Anne of Green Gables, is my show. For those of you who may not be familiar, Anne is an imaginative, talkative orphan who comes to live with the taciturn Marissa and Matthew Cuthbert on a farm in Prince Edward Island circa 1875.
Shortly after Anne’s arrival, Marissa’s favorite brooch goes missing. Anne is blamed and sent away. When Marissa finds the brooch, Matthew hastens to retrieve Anne, but it proves a perilous task. Eventually Anne does return to Green Gables and this unlikely trio sets about learning how to live together.
I found myself wondering what sort of life Anne would have faced if Marissa had not repented her mistake, if Matthew had not endured the hardship involved in righting a wrong. If the Cuthberts had not cared about or been committed to truth and justice, Anne’s life would have been dismal. And the Cuthberts’ lives would have been very different as well.
Bringing Anne home to Green Gables was the right thing to do, but it was not the easy thing. Marissa and Matthew had to adjust to having a very different sort of person share their home. Anne brought confusion, was a challenge - she also brought new life, was redemptive.
May it be so for all of us.
