What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction is a mentoring relationship between a seeker and a spiritual guide. Thomas Merton said, “spiritual direction is nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director – the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.”
The Center for Religious Development in Cambridge, Mass states:
"We define Christian spiritual direction as help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship."
Spiritual direction is often offered in one-to-one sessions on a monthly or quarterly basis. Some directors offer their services as a ministry, some charge a nominal fee per session.
What spiritual direction is not
Spiritual direction is not
counseling.
- counseling.
- therapy.
- financial advice.
It is not direction in the sense that the director tells you what to do or gives life advice. The director merely accompanies and listens to the working of God in your life.
